At The Garment League, we believe in the transformative power of fashion as a visual art, a medium for education, and a tool for workforce development. Our unique approach operates across these three pillars to empower creativity and foster real-world career opportunities.
Art
Fashion as Visual Art: TGL emphasizes that fashion is a form of visual art. From conceptual illustration to garment construction, the entire design process is treated as an artistic endeavor. Fashion isn’t just functional; it’s a form of creative expression. Fashion Illustration: Illustration is a key component of the fashion design process and is taught as an essential skill at TGL. Through sketching and digital tools, designers bring their creative visions to life, and TGL showcases this artistic form in its programs and events. Creative Showcases: Events like Phoenix Swim Week, On Central, and Phoenix Man feature collections that serve as visual art for the community, allowing designers to present their works in high-production runway environments. These events highlight the artistry in fashion design, from the conceptual phase to the final presentation. Collaborations: Partnerships with entities such as the Phoenix Art Museum and Roosevelt Row extend the understanding of fashion as a visual art form, incorporating it into wider artistic and cultural conversations. Key: Positions fashion as a core element of the visual arts, emphasizing illustration and construction as vital artistic disciplines, and provides platforms for creative expression.
Education
Youth Education Programs: The Fashion Industry Youth Initiative (FIYI) integrates fashion education with STEM and literacy. This holistic approach includes training in fashion illustration, design, and technical construction, helping students understand fashion as both an art and a science. High School Graduate Placement: TGL ensures that its high school graduates are fully prepared for top accredited fashion college programs, offering portfolio development and guidance on applications. The focus on artistic skill development, including illustration, prepares students for competitive programs in the fashion industry. Adult Certification Programs: Through Pattern Fashion Industry Trade School (PFITS), TGL provides adults with the opportunity to develop both creative and technical skills. Courses in fashion design and illustration, along with business training, equip students for careers in the fashion industry. Key: Equips students with the artistic and technical skills necessary for success in fashion education and professional pathways, from youth programs to adult certifications.
Workforce Development
Real-World Experience: TGL integrates practical experience into its programs, offering students hands-on involvement in the fashion industry. From illustration and design to event production, students develop a full range of skills that prepare them for real-world careers. Mentorship & Career Placement: Through the GRIT mentorship program and TGL’s focus on career readiness, participants gain the industry connections and experience needed to thrive. Graduates are supported in their applications to top fashion programs and positioned for success in their chosen careers. Job Placements & Internships: TGL partners with local brands and employers to offer internships, job placements, and career guidance. This ensures that participants transition smoothly into the workforce, whether in design, illustration, or production roles. Key: Provides participants with the creative, technical, and business skills needed to succeed in the fashion industry, ensuring that workforce development is integral to the entire educational process.
